Premier Uses MCC Speech to Look Back While Keeping An Eye Towards the Future

On April 19, 2016, Brian Pallister stood on a stage, flanked by his newly elected team, and talked about his vision for moving Manitoba forward. On April 19, 2017, Premier Brian Pallister, with many of the same people who stood behind him twelve months ago looking on from the crowd, spoke about their first year in office and how they continue to work on moving Manitoba forward, at more responsible pace.

Addressing a record-setting business crowd at the Manitoba Chambers of Commerce (MCC) Leaders Series Breakfast Presented by Deloitte, Premier Pallister touched on familiar themes of what his government inherited from the previous NDP governments; high debt, out-of-control spending, credit downgrades, rankings at or near the bottom of 23 categories, and out-migration. The Premier also used his speech to outline some of the improvements made during the past year; joining the New West Partnership, implementing the 96/4 tourism investment model, and creating a red tape reduction commission. The path forward will include implementation of a more balanced and responsible approach to spending. From a Manitoba Chambers of Commerce perspective, the Premier’s speech hinted at plans to generate new venture capital for Manitoba business and entrepreneurs, something MCC has long advocated on behalf for.

As he concluded his speech, Premier Pallister spent a few minutes talking about the makeup of Manitobans, our charitable nature, and that we don’t turn away from a challenge. It was evident, as parted the stage, the previous way of how Manitoba does business will not make the day. “The status quo will not do. It is not an option”, the Premier concluded as he left the stage.
