Founded in 1872, the Winnipeg Free Press it is the oldest newspaper in western Canada. It has the largest readership of any newspaper in the province and is regarded as the newspaper of record for Winnipeg and Manitoba. Founded in 1906, in St. Boniface as a horseshoe manufacturer, Gerdau Industries moved to Selkirk and started production operation 1916. Gerdau is the leading company in the production of long steel in the Americas and is one of the major suppliers of specialty steel in the world. Gerdau in Selkirk is the only mini-mill steel mill production and steel recycling company in Manitoba employing over 540 Manitobans.
Gerdau’s process is vertically integrated. Starting with raw material, our Selkirk metallics recycling yard is one of the largest within the Gerdau Group with the capacity to process 500,000 tons of metal annually though our shear, shredder and railcar dismantling process.
